Modernisation in extremely confined conditions: Precision planning for a historic tunnel.
For the modernisation of the Southampton Tunnel, RAILONE carried out an independent design review in 2009 and developed special precast concrete components to integrate the third-rail fastening system into the RHEDA 2000® system.
As part of the modernisation of the Southampton Tunnel in London, RAILONE conducted an independent review of the design prepared by the engineering consultancy MS Atkins. In addition to the confined cross-section of the approximately 100-year-old tunnel, particular challenges included the transition zones to the adjacent ballasted track and the integration of the third rail into the RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system. Special precast concrete components were developed to accommodate the third-rail fastening system.
The purpose of the modernisation was to enable larger vehicles to use the existing line. This required the tunnel clearance profile to be adapted by lowering the track alignment. The ballastless track was therefore designed using the low-construction-height RHEDA 2000® system. RAILONE’s planning services were complemented by on-site quality monitoring during construction.
