ATHENS, GREECE
RHEDA CITY Helps Preserve Athens’ Archaeologically Significant Structures.
Between 2009 and 2011, RAILONE supported the modernisation of the 34.5 km Athens Metro line using the innovative RHEDA CITY ballastless track system.
With its state-of-the-art metro system, Athens is able to meet steadily increasing transport demand. The metro network, comprising three lines with a total length of approximately 55 km, runs through historically and archaeologically significant areas and alongside historic structures. This presents particular challenges during both construction and operation. The flexible RHEDA CITY ballastless track system allows modified designs to be used for noise and vibration mitigation.
This project also marked the first use of RHEDA CITY without reinforcement, enabling more efficient use of resources. RAILONE engineers also provided design consultancy and detailed design services to support the efficient modernisation of the busiest line, which connects the city centre with the ancient port of Piraeus.
