MANNHEIM–BASEL, GERMANY
BBS 1 Wide Sleeper in Trial Operation
In 2003, a 500 m test section using BBS 1 wide sleepers was installed between Bad Krozingen and Heitersheim on the Mannheim–Basel line in Germany to provide controlled drainage within the track superstructure.
The test section was designed to assess the specific properties of this sleeper solution under real operating conditions, with positive results. The wide sleeper features a special geometry that directs surface water outwards. This reduces water infiltration into the subgrade, particularly in sensitive areas such as water protection zones.
