Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Comprehensive Renovation of the Nuremberg–Regensburg Railway Line at Neumarkt Station
Neumarkt i.d.OPf., 6 February 2026 – The official launch of the comprehensive renovation of the Nuremberg–Regensburg railway line was marked by a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, 6 February 2026, at Neumarkt railway station. Representatives from politics, the railway industry, the construction sector, as well as project participants from RAILONE, thus marked the beginning of a key infrastructure project for the Nuremberg metropolitan region and the Upper Palatinate. The aim of the project is to secure the long-term capacity, safety and sustainability of one of northern Bavaria’s most important railway connections.
The Nuremberg–Regensburg corridor is an important part of the Rhine–Danube European transport corridor and is one of the busiest railway lines in Bavaria. During the five-month construction period from 6 February to 10 July 2026, Deutsche Bahn AG will carry out extensive renewal work along the 88-kilometre route, including the replacement of railway sleepers, turnouts and overhead lines. This modernisation will make the line even more reliable and sustainably increase the availability of the infrastructure.
A key project partner in the renovation of the railway sleepers is RAILONE, based in Neumarkt. The local company is responsible for supplying new concrete sleepers as well as professionally recycling the old sleepers that are removed. In this way, RAILONE is making a significant contribution to the technical quality and sustainable implementation of the project. RAILONE’s contribution to this major project includes the delivery of approximately 75,000 new railway sleepers and the recycling of approximately 132,000 old sleepers. Around half of the new railway sleepers will be manufactured at the plant in Coswig and delivered from the Nuremberg warehouse for the first construction section, which runs from Feucht to Neumarkt. The remaining railway sleepers required for the second construction section, which runs from Neumarkt to Regensburg, will be produced at the Neumarkt plant and supplied from there.

Concrete sleepers that can be refurbished are given a second service life on secondary railway lines. Concrete sleepers that can no longer be refurbished are crushed, and valuable materials such as concrete and steel are also returned to the material cycle, helping to conserve natural resources and reduce CO₂ emissions.
